A Magistrate Court in Abuja’s Wuse Zone 2 has instructed Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to present retired Assistant Inspector-General, Oyediran Oyeyemi, in court over accusations of impersonating a serving police officer.
This order came during a Wednesday session, where Magistrate Sunday Adukwu ruled on a case brought by private citizen Uche Ezike, represented by counsel Anthony Agbazuere. According to Ezike, Oyeyemi, who retired on March 3, 2024, allegedly continued to use the title of Assistant Inspector-General in correspondence dated May 6, 2024, failing to indicate his retired status.
Agbazuere informed the court that Oyeyemi had been officially served, but did not appear as ordered. He further alleged that Oyeyemi wears his police uniform and displays it in his office, and remains Secretary of the Police Cooperative Society, all while not disclosing his retirement in his communications. These actions, Agbazuere argued, amount to impersonation under Section 132 of the Penal Code.
The magistrate stated that the gravity of the allegations requires Oyeyemi’s attendance. Inspector-General Egbetokun was therefore ordered to ensure Oyeyemi appears in court on September 8, when the hearing will continue.
