Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland and one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers, died Sunday at the age of 91, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun announced.
Oba Adetona ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, and reigned for more than 64 years, playing a pivotal role in the cultural and social development of Ijebuland and the Yoruba people. Born May 10, 1934, into the Royal House of Anikinaiya in Ijebu Ode, he was widely respected across Nigeria for his leadership and commitment to tradition.
Governor Abiodun expressed deep sorrow over the monarch’s passing, noting the significance of the day, which also marked the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Details regarding the circumstances of the Awujale’s death have not been fully disclosed. Official statements from the palace are expected in the coming days.
Oba Adetona’s death marks the end of an era for Ijebuland, where he was regarded as a custodian of Yoruba heritage and a unifying figure for his people.
