Bashir Maniya, a former bandit kingpin who renounced his criminal past to join the fight against terror in Zamfara, was identified as the operative who fired the shot that killed notorious bandit commander Kachallah Yellow Dan Bokolo.
Maniya, once feared across Zamfara’s forests, was part of a joint security operation that included a DSS special team and HYBRID forces from Maiduguri. The team, operating in armored vehicles, targeted three major bandit camps: Bello Turji’s camp in Fakai Forest, Shinkafi LGA, Zamfara State; Malam Ila’s camp in Kagara Forest, Isa LGA, Sokoto State; and Dan Bokolo’s camp, also in Fakai Forest.
During the operation, the convoy was ambushed by fighters loyal to Bello Turji.
Under heavy fire, one of the armored vehicles overturned, resulting in chaos.
Despite being wounded, Maniya exited the vehicle and returned fire, killing three attackers and critically wounding Dan Bokolo, reportedly shooting him in the leg.
The clash resulted in the deaths of about 25 bandits, while Nigerian security forces lost 13 men, including 10 HYBRID operatives and three volunteers.
Maniya’s actions came at a steep price.
He was eventually surrounded, captured, and beheaded by Turji’s men.
Bello Turji later released a video claiming responsibility for Maniya’s death, displaying the destroyed armored vehicle and confirming that Maniya was killed during the confrontation.
The video also refuted reports that local vigilantes were responsible for Dan Bokolo’s death. Multiple security sources and members of the Zamfara State Security Guards confirmed that no vigilante operation took place in the area.
Following the attack, Dan Bokolo was evacuated by his men in a desperate attempt to save his life.
He was moved through several villages—Shanawa, Kuriyan Dambo, Maresuwa, and Burkawa—before succumbing to his injuries in Kamarawa on July 26, 2025, three days after the initial attack.
Contrary to some media reports, security sources maintain that the operation was carried out by HYBRID forces and not local vigilantes, as some narratives have claimed Dan Bokolo.
