Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi of the Nigerian Army’s 22 Armoured Brigade reportedly killed his wife before taking his own life on October 11, 2025, military officials confirmed Sunday.
The incident occurred at the soldier’s apartment in Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters within Wawa Cantonment.
The two bodies were discovered after Femi had sought permission from his superior to attend to personal matters while on duty.
Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 22 Armoured Brigade, issued a statement describing the event as tragic and said the Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation, which has caused shock among residents of the barracks.
The remains of the deceased have been secured, and a thorough investigation is underway to determine the circumstances leading to the deaths.
Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, pledged a full inquiry and promised to make the findings public while implementing measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The army extended condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and sought public understanding and cooperation during the investigation.
